Description
IU Kokomo Grants-in-Aid of Faculty Research & Creative Activity are intended to support faculty research and creative activities, or specialized training or education that can broaden faculty expertise with the research and creative aspects of their disciplines. Grant-in-Aid awards are for a maximum of $4,000 in a one-year period.
Eligibility
All tenure-track faculty are eligible for Grant-in-Aid of Faculty Research & Creative Activity funding support. Grants are limited to one award per year per recipient. To be eligible for Grant-in-Aid support in two consecutive years, applicants must provide evidence of efforts to obtain additional external funding. Grant-in-Aid may not be received for three consecutive years.
Grant Funding Criteria
Applications for Grant-in-Aid of Faculty Research & Creative Activity will be evaluated using five criteria:
Clarity The research, creative or educational activity is described in simple, direct language and with sufficient detail that the proposal can be understood and objectively evaluated by individuals who may not be familiar with the applicant’s discipline or area of expertise.
Relevance The proposed research, creative or educational activity is a relevant area of inquiry or has the potential to contribute to knowledge and understanding in an area or discipline.
Design The methods, materials, sequence of activities and timeline of the research, creative or educational activity are logical and realistic.
Budget Anticipated expenses associated with the proposed research, creative or educational activity are appropriate and reasonable.
Qualifications The applicant possesses the background and skills necessary to undertake the proposed research, creative, or educational activity, as demonstrated through training and experience, or previous successful work in an area or discipline.
Applications for Grant-in-Aid of Faculty Research & Creative Activity will be evaluated first and foremost on the basis of merit. When applications outnumber the available grants in any year, preference will be given to worthy applications which could not be funded in a previous year, applications from junior faculty (within first two years at IU Kokomo) or from senior faculty seeking new direction, applications that involve training or education, activities with partial funding from other sources in need of additional support, and applications from faculty who have demonstrated positive outcomes from previous funding.
Application Format
Applications for Grant-in-Aid of Faculty Research & Creative Activity should be in the form of a narrative, in PDF format, not to exceed 10 pages, that includes the following sections and information:
- Applicant Name, Rank & Academic Unit
- Activity Title & Description
- Activity Overview & Timeline
- Budget
- Letters of Support
The Activity Title & Description should be a one-paragraph, abstract-like summary of the proposed research, creative or educational activity.

Applications should be accompanied by two letters of support from individuals knowledgeable about the proposed research, creative or educational activity. One letter should be contributed by an associate within the applicant’s academic unit. The letter does not need to be from the chair or dean, but it must be from an individual who possesses expertise in the area of the proposed activity and is able to address its relevance, feasibility, merit, etc., as well as providing comment on the applicant’s background, skills, competence, or record of scholarly or creative success. A second letter should be contributed by an individual outside the applicant’s department. This does not need to be an individual outside the IU Kokomo academic community; however, the individual should have the expertise needed to comment on the merit of the proposed research, creative or educational activity.
Include documentation of IU IRB approval, if applicable, and attach an up-do-date CV to the application.
