The Course Reserves service allows instructors to set aside books or other materials for class use. Students can pick up and check out Reserve items from the library's Circulation desk for a short period of time. Reserve items are limited to physical materials.
Before you place an item on Reserve, consider posting materials that are in special or high demand for class assignments to your course Canvas site. Links to articles from many of the library's online databases can be posted in Canvas using permalinks or the library's Proxy Link Generator. Student Course Packs can also be arranged through the IU Kokomo Bookstore.
Instructions for placing materials on Reserve
To place an item on Reserve, you may complete the online Reserve Request Form or a paper form at the Circulation desk. Bring the reserve material(s) to the Circulation desk. Please allow a minimum of 2 working days for processing.
Items may not be placed on Reserve on a permanent basis. Materials are removed from Reserves annually. All photocopies and faculty-owned material must comply with current copyright law.
Reservable materials
The following items can be placed on Reserve:
- Circulating library materials
- Photocopies
- Faculty-owned materials
- Media materials
Non-reservable materials
The following items cannot be placed on Reserve:
- Library reference books
- Library periodicals
- Microforms
- Materials belonging to other libraries
- Bestsellers/McNaughton books
Faculty-generated video or audio recordings, whether taped off-air or copied from another tape, are also ineligible due to copyright restrictions.
Placing copies on Reserve
Due to the strict nature of the U.S. Copyright Code and litigation involving photocopying for educational use, the following guidelines have been established for Reserve photocopy use:
- Each faculty member is responsible for providing all photocopies that are to be placed on Reserve, as well as for seeing that all material conforms to current copyright legislation.
- The library will accept a maximum of 3 photocopies of a single article for Reserve use. Faculty are urged to keep in mind the way in which Reserves are utilized; rarely are more than 2 copies of the same article used at once.
- To comply with the copyright law's requirement of spontaneity, the library will not place the same photocopied article on Reserve for more than one semester. If you would like to use the same material on an ongoing basis, we encourage you to purchase a reprint of the journal article or a copy of the book or to seek permission from the publisher to photocopy the material. Copyright clearance may be requested by contacting the Copyright Clearance Center.
- Photocopies taken from books will be accepted for one-time Reserve use, provided that the copied section does not exceed 10% of the entire work. If more of the work is necessary for instruction, contact a librarian to see how the material might be obtained.
