Sports Nutrition

If you're an athlete, you understand that food is fuel for our bodies. The Sports Nutrition Program at Indiana University Kokomo provides nutrition education and support to all athletes for the purposes of sports performance enhancement and good health promotion.

For your best performance on the field, on the court, or on the course, you want to make sure you are fueling your body the best way you can. Choose proper fuel throughout the day. Make sure to eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Include healthy snacks that meet your training schedule. Also include the following each day:

  • Eat every 3-4 hours during the day.
  • Make sure to choose both a pre-performance snack and a post-performance snack.
  • Balance your intake of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats during the day.
  • Choose whole foods and minimize processed foods.
  • Choose whole foods and minimize processed foods.
  • Keep adequately hydrated and choose wisely. Avoid sugary drinks with preservatives and additives. Water is needed for good performance and dehydration impedes performance.
  • Take time for proper recovery. Little rest time eventually leads to overtraining issues and results in poor performance. Proper amounts of sleep are also important as it allows for both mental and physical regeneration.

The use of supplements needs to be carefully evaluated. The sports nutrition staff at IU Kokomo encourages you to discuss any supplements with a staff member before taking them.
