With new regulations from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), high school teachers are required to hold a master’s degree in the field or a master’s degree plus 18 credit hours of graduate coursework in a specific discipline. This program can help you prepare to teach dual-credit courses or it can help you to teach at a community college.
This master’s degree has a two-part “stackable” structure. First, you complete an online 20-credit-hour graduate certificate in literature, composition studies, or language and literature which allows you to specialize your studies, skills, and knowledge. Then, you continue with 16 credits of master’s-level coursework.
Degree Requirements
The online Master of Arts in English requires you to complete 36 credit hours. These credit hours break down into the following requirements:
- English graduate certificate (20 credit hours)
- MA core courses (8 credit hours)
- MA elective courses (8 credit hours)
Application Requirements
As part of the stackable nature of this degree, you must have successfully completed one of the three graduate certificates to be accepted into this program. You must also have earned a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale in at least three courses in one of the certificate programs.
For the online application, you will need:
- A 250-word personal statement explaining your background and your reasons for entering the program
- Two letters of recommendation
