Counseling Services
Students seek help through CAPS for a variety of reasons. Many students experience social, developmental, or emotional stressors during their college experience that can hinder academic growth and success. Recognizing the obstacles to progress and working to learn skills to more effectively handle these difficulties goes a long way in reach personal balance AND academic achievement. We are here to help. We provide services in a supportive, confidential environment that is free to all current IU Kokomo students. Our professionally qualified and licensed clinicians are trained in a variety of treatment modalities and interventions. Your success is our success.
What to Expect
CAPS utilizes a primary solution focused, individual approach. You can reach us by phone at 765-455-9465 or via email at IUKCAPS.iu.edu to make an intake appointment. This first session is a little different than others because we need to get to know who you are and how we can best help. Please arrive at your initial appointment 15 minutes early to complete the initial intake paperwork. You will be asked questions about why you are seeking services as well as some questions about your health history. These services are offered to current IU Kokomo students at no cost to the student.
Near the end of the initial session, you and your counselor will decide frequency and duration of additional sessions (and/or discuss alternative treatment referrals if needed). Individual counseling sessions usually last 45-50 minutes. During the first few sessions, you and your counselor will discuss treatment goals and work to implement a short-term approach. The remainder of the treatment will work towards the identified goals.
Extended duration services will be reviewed and approved on a case-by-case basis. Please note, students with more intensive treatment needs may be referred to community providers after the initial evaluation in conjunction with or as an alternative to IU Kokomo CAPS.
IU Kokomo CAPS reserves the right to refer individuals to other mental health care providers for concerns that are beyond the scope of practice of the providers. During times of high clinical demand, CAPS may also make referrals for individuals in need of more immediate care.
Our Staff
