Xuanyi Wang's paintings utilize ornamentation and her own body as a visual bridge between intangible consciousness and tangible beauty. The body's form is altered with additional ornamental patterns so as to become a visual manifestation of the inner spirit. Wang grew up in a traditional Chinese family culture, then later came to the United States, where she says she experienced a more liberal society. "As a transnational artist, my imagery is motivated by how womanhood is defined in the United States versus China. The cultures of the East and West have become intertwined in my persona," says Wang.
