What is an Academic Success Coach?

An Academic Success Coach is an expert who observes a learner carefully, notes strengths and weaknesses, and uses their supportive and trusting relationship with the learner to offer specific guidance

We are professionals who are dedicated to assisting our students in pursuing a college degree and setting a pathway toward a successful and rewarding life beyond IU Kokomo. We support first-year students, transfer students, returning adult students, students facing academic or personal challenges, or any student who wants the benefit of our services. We do this by meeting individually with students at times convenient to them; connecting students with campus resources; and teaching skills such as time management, stress management and effective study habits.

Cathy Barnes

Hello, I’m Coach Barnes. When I was a student at Purdue, I didn’t have a coach, but I did have Mrs. Redmond. I would stop by her desk once a week to discuss my goals.  
 
As a coach well-versed in a variety of study skills, test-taking strategies, and anxiety control activities, I listen to students’ goals and assist them with their plans to achieve them. I am excited to support students on their academic journeys.

Hello, I'm Coach Mike. I'm a graduate from Indiana Wesleyan University and Ball State University. I wish I had a Success Coach when I went to college - what a difference it would have made in my life. I work with all students, and value working with students from various backgrounds and ethnicities. Lucien Madding

Hello, my name is Lucien. I understand how challenging and difficult going to school can be, but I know with the right support and some personal determination, receiving a college degree is doable. My academic journey is unique, because I dropped out of community college when I was 19 years old and didn’t go back to college until 25 years later. It took me 7 ½ years to receive my first bachelor’s degree and 4 ½ years to attain my master’s degree while going to school part-time and working full-time.  

Success Coaching can be an academic game changer, and it would be my honor to provide the support you may need. I hope you’ll take advantage of this great opportunity.  

Carole Ogle

I am a First-Generation college student and IU Kokomo graduate who interrupted my studies several times before obtaining my degree. I know what it is like to balance family and college, to work a 12-hour day and then begin studying. Along the way, I learned time management and prioritization skills, and I am eager to share this knowledge to assist you in overcoming obstacles. 

Kristen Snoddy

I am a retired IU Kokomo English faculty member who also spent time on campus in roles such as directing the Writing Center and leading the WWII trip. My teaching career actually began at the middle school and high school levels where I spent several years coaching athletics as well. No matter the level or responsibility, I have always loved working with students to help them be successful. Often it takes the encouragement and guidance of one caring individual to impact a student's life—I hope to fill that role.
